I enjoyed your column in this month's My Mac Magazine. I also selectively copy and paste Internet pages. By the way, CopyPaste is a marvelous program which allows me to copy successively and then paste in rotation or command-c-keyboard opens up a copy archive. When I need the graphics, I just select the graphic, make a pict of it and then insert it into Claris(Apple)Works in the proper text geography.

Mac OS 8.6 Letters
Before you get carried away with effusions for the generosity of Apple and the greed of Microsoft, please remember that Apple ALWAYS used to give away its system software until a few versions ago.

Very true, Apple did indeed give away operating system software up until (I believe) System 7.0. At that time, in view of the enormous expense of programming and development, they must have decided that future versions of the Mac Operating System (not bug fixes) could no longer be without some cost to the end user. This, of course, just shows how much more a big deal giving away 8.6 is.
Compatibility of Mac OS 8.6 with Mac Clones
Mr. Robertson:
Do you have any information as to whether or not Mac OS 8.6 will run on the Mac clones? Specifically, I purchased a UMAX SuperMac S 900.G3/300 and installed an additional FireBall 8.4 Gig drive; I had been led (or misled) to believe that I was purchasing a legitimate computer supported by Apple. Those who purchased clones have a new measure of what the meaning of "is" is. But to return to the problem at hand. I have heard that some users of Mac clones have had their drives virtually destroyed after upgrading to Mac OS 8.5, although many others have experienced no such problems. Do you have any thoughts on this matter?

While I have not tried 8.6 on a clone, I have heard that it works just fine. Will it work on yours? No way to tell yet. (Keep an eye on MacFixIt.com) As to HD corruption from 8.5, this was a vexing problem that was not limited to clone users. In fact, quite a few people experienced it.

I was reading your magazine online and was struck by the "My 30 Seconds" article. The commercial that was written by Sean D. should be used. It is a visually satisfying and striking idea for a commercial. It would capture my attention! I was just amazed at the idea and wanted to put my two cents in.

Fonts?
First of all, this month's issue of My Mac was great! I have one suggestion for next month's (and future publications). Could you please bundle the font which you made it with so I can see it in all its glory? Every time I start up your great e-zine, it comes up with a dialog stating that 'Gill Sans Condensed Bold 14' could not be found on my system.

Yes, for some reason a few people without the Gill Sans fonts got that message. Actually, you did not see anything. We convert all fonts to Times before we send out the DOCMaker edition, but for some reason a stray word in Gill Sans Condensed Bold 14 got through :-( I will endeavor to see that it doesn't happen again, I promise ;-) (Editor's Note: any stray word in Gill Sans Condensed Bold 14 occurred after it left the hands of Editor Russ and Copy Editor Jim... just thought we'd let you know.. ;-) )
Full Page Adds
I have been reading My Mac for a couple of months now and I love it. Any way you can pay for it is great. Besides I like to peruse full page ads also. Seeing current hardware prices is always interesting.

I have to admit I also like the adverts. In fact, starting next month we'll have yet another sponsor displaying a full pager: Vimage, the makers of both a new iMac motion camera (which I hear is really neat!) and potent G3 upgrade cards (I use one myself).
Rather than simply present a "standard" full page ad like one might see in the back of a print magazine, I suggested they use the ad space to not only provide pricing, but to let our readers know what their upgrade cards can do, which systems they work with, their ease of installation, and that sort of thing. It would still be an "ad," but one that informs as well as sells.
Re: 6500/300 and Zip clicking
Hi Tim,
I have a followup report for the click of death, American Express buyers' insurance covered the replacement and it's new and working. Also only Apple drivers will work—Iomega's update drivers don't work. Not yet anyway. I'm out $150 in backups of old Zip disks. I bought one new one and it works fine. I'm just lucky my Zip drive was not an add-on piece of hardware and came inside the Tower, otherwise they wouldn't cover it.

Great news concerning your buyer's insurance coverage, James! Buying computer gear with a credit card certainly has its advantages. Unfortunately, there are many people (including me) who had to pay to fix or replace their faulty Zip drives. Let this be a lesson to us all.
